About Chalkline Math

Free calculators for people building fences, pouring concrete and taking on other yard projects.

Most project calculators online either bury the answer under ads or give you a number without telling you where it came from. We wanted tools that give you a clear shopping list and explain the math, so you can check it against your own plans.

How we calculate

Each calculator uses standard rules of thumb from the trades: post depth as a share of fence height, concrete volume from hole size, and so on. Every page explains the formulas it uses. Prices are rough US averages, and you can edit them to match your local store.

These are estimates for planning and shopping. Local building codes, frost depth, soil and wind conditions can change what your project needs, so check with your local building department before you dig.
